14 Hearty Animal Facts to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Pet

Posted February 11, 2017

It’s Valentine’s, which means all things love and hearts. In celebration of our hearts, let’s look at 14 strange facts about our animal friends’ hearts.

1. Human, dog, and cat hearts are nearly identical, with only slight differences in a few valves and blood vessels.

2. A shrimp’s heart is located in its head.

3. A Male Gentoo Penguin will express his love interest in a mate by offering her a pebble.

4. A Blue Whale’s heart is the size of a small car (think VW beetle) and it’s heartbeat can be heard from 2 miles away.

5. The octopus, squid and cuttlefish have 3 hearts.

6. A human heart beats approximately 70-80 times per minute, a cat 110-140/minute, a dog 60-140/minute, and a hummingbird beats in excess of 1,000/minute!

7. A Python’s heart actually grows during mealtimes (sounds like something out of a Dr. Seuss book).

8. A giraffe’s heart weighs up to 12kgs and has to fight the force of gravity to pump blood all the way up to their head!

9. Mammals and birds have 4-chambered hearts, but frogs only have 3 chambers.

10. The earthworm does not have a heart – it has 3 pseudohearts that squeeze vessels to help circulate blood instead.

11. Humans can regenerate their livers, some lizards can regenerate their tails, but the Zebrafish can regenerate its heart.

12. It is said that people who own pets not only live longer, but also have less stress and have fewer heart attacks.

13. Cheetahs are able to accelerate so quickly because their heart rate can jump from 120 to 250BPM within seconds.

14. More than 9 million big hearted pet owners are expected to buy gifts for their pets this Valentine’s Day and the average spend is estimated to be $5.04. If we do the math, that’s $45,360,000.00!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Have someone special that you want to show your appreciation for. What better way than to take care of their pet? After all, we do know that most people love their pets first! NHV Gift Certificates or My Little Lion and My Little Wolf treats might just mean the world to them.
