Going Green with Your Pets

Posted April 22, 2016

Today is Earth Day, so to show our appreciation of Mother Earth, we are offering up some tips and tricks for going green with your pets.

Clean green:  Not only is choosing a green cleaner better for the environment, it is safer for your pet too!  Any time you clean a household item with a toxic chemical these chemicals get transferred to your pets whether it is through their paws from walking across a mopped floor, or from rolling around on your freshly cleaned carpet.  The next time your furry friend has a little accident inside the house, use items from your kitchen cupboards to remove all evidence.  Start by picking up any pieces, then soaking up the moisture with a towel or paper towel.  Once there is no moisture left, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the area and wait approximately 5 minutes.  Next, pour equal parts warm water and white distilled vinegar onto the baking soda.  Wait about another five minutes, then either vacuum with a wet vac or blot with a clean towel or paper towel.

Reduce reuse and recycle:  Instead of throwing away plastic bags (grocery bags, bread bags, cereal bags), roll them up and use them to refill your doggy poop bag holder or for litter cleaning bags.  Even better, you could use reusable grocery bags and purchase compostable doggy bags!  The next time you purchase canned food, opt for the larger size and put the leftovers in a reusable container and recycle the can.  With the larger cans of food, the less metal you end up throwing out in the long run.

Spay and neuter your pets:  This might sound silly in relation to going green, but it actually helps lower the carbon footprint.  Animal shelters have to use supplies to take care of the animals they house, and less fur friends to care for means less shelter refuse.  It also helps relieve the burden and stress of needing to find homes for hundreds of unwanted pets each year.

Play green:  Consider buying toys and accessories made from recycled materials.  You can find anything from stuffed animals to cat scratching poles with refillable cardboard inserts.  And once you are done with the shredded cardboard, use it for compost or recycle it!

Donate:  Thinking about doing some spring cleaning?  Why not donate your old towels, blankets and bedding to your local animal shelter.  Not only will it keep these items out of the landfill, but it will help the shelter save on the cost of supplies for the animals.
