Home-Cooked Pet Meals: It’s Easy, Healthy, & Fun

Posted March 31, 2017

A well-balanced diet is key to keeping our pets healthy. A poor diet could result in a compromised immune system and many health complications for our beloved animals. So, what does a healthy, nutritious diet for a dog or cat look like?

With all the options out there from home-cooked to raw, dried or canned food, it can get a little overwhelming. The truth is, there is no single way of feeding our pets. But, if pet parents need a guiding rule for their pet’s diet, it would be this:

Any pet diet should be a balance of lean proteins, fats, carbohydrates, organic vegetables, herbage, water and a mix of natural minerals and vitamins.

At NHV, we love home-cooked pet meals made with healthy, organic ingredients. Carefully prepared, home-cooked meals that take into consideration the dietary needs of your pet’s age, breed, and health conditions, are free of the toxic ingredients (additives, colors, modified substances, preservatives) that are found in some commercial brands of pet food. These toxic ingredients can build up in the body and can cause kidney or liver issues down the road, or cause other health conditions like heart disease or skin problems. Feeding home-cooked is fun, easy, and a great way to show your pet just how much they mean to you.

Here’s a recipe that we love. It’s great for dogs and cats. This specific recipe is more of a “topper” – meaning we use it over their regular high quality canned food to give them extra nutrients. In fact, we just made this yummy home-cooked meal for our new puppy Chaya and her cat brother and sister.

RECIPE: Chicken Liver and Blueberry Delight

This home-cooked pet recipe lasts about 4 days for our puppy and 2 cats.

A little tip: Organ meat is a fantastic source of protein, iron, folic acid, and B vitamins for your pet. Whenever possible, use organ meat as your protein source.

Cook on medium heat until water is reduced and mixture is dry (should take about 45min). Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil (for fat).

NHV Daily Supplement Pack

Once cooked, let it cool and then store this healthy mix in your fridge. Reuse whenever needed. When feeding add NHV’s Daily Supplement Kit for pets. Adding these natural herbal remedies will help increase the amount of overall nutrition your pet receives. These herbal remedies help promote a healthy skin and coat, help reduce inflammation, scavenge free radicals, help fill nutritional voids and stimulate digestion.
