How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Your Things From Being Eaten – Separation Anxiety

Pet Care Tips < 1 min read
Happy dog - I eat pillows

As the kids head back to school and the adults are at work, many dogs may begin to show signs of separation anxiety. While home alone, some dogs will show their love for you by barking, eating your favorite piece of furniture, and peeing on the carpet. Not exactly how you wish they would display their feelings!

Here are a few easy ways to help your anxious pup become adjusted to not having you around:

Keep your exit and return home calm and relaxed.

  • Exercise! Being active with your dog via a vigorous walk or run before you leave allows your dog to be resting while you are gone. Just like in humans, exercise can decrease your dog’s stress. It also helps that they will be too worn out to get into much trouble after you leave!
  • Keep your exit and return home calm and relaxed. Not making a big deal of your exit or return to the home communicates to your dog that your absence is not a big deal. A simple pat on the head and saying goodbye will do. The same can be said for your return. Of course, you have missed them all day, but a calm entry into the home may be saving your favorite shoes from being eaten tomorrow.
  • Be sure to reward them! By providing a treat upon your exit, your dog will look forward to your absences. Keep your treats and dog toys mentally stimulating to keep your dog busy while you are gone!
