Milk Thistle – The No. 1 Herbal Remedy for Liver Disease

Posted October 17, 2013

Milk Thistle is one of the most popular herbal remedies for liver disease in humans, it is now also being recognized as an effective remedy for our pets. Liver disease is a common problem in older dogs, this may be due to the increased exposure to toxins in today’s environment, and since the function of the liver is to remove toxins from the bloodstream, it is often overused and overwhelmed.

Exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and acetaminophen, worming medications, trauma, disease, infections and most commonly, a poor diet, are all factors that cause stress on the liver and can result in liver disease.

What does the liver do?
The liver is one of the more complex organs in the body some of its daily duties include:

  • filtering bacteria from the blood
  • bile production and function
  • maintaining blood clotting functions
  • converting sugars, carbohydrates and fats to store for later use

And that’s not all; the liver also plays a major role in the function of hormones, enzymes and cholesterol.

What does Milk Thistle do?
Milk thistle helps the liver in three ways:

  • As a powerful antioxidant it helps protect the liver from oxidation.
  • It contains silymarin, which helps the detoxification process.
  • It strengthens and regenerates the liver by stimulating the growth of new liver cells.

Symptoms of a damaged liver can range from the minor signs of an overtaxed liver to the major signs of a more serious condition. Fortunately, the liver can regenerate and Milk Thistle has proven results in liver repair.

You don’t have to wait until your dog has full-blown liver disease to use Milk Thistle; it’s good to take as a preventative measure. It is especially recommended if your dog is on medications such as steroids, heartworm prevention or pain and anti-inflammatory medications.

Milk Thistle is good to use as a general liver boost. A sluggish liver might make your dog seems lethargic and depressed and good dose of milk thistle could be the answer to his lack of energy.

On the other hand, maybe all your dog needs is a kitten!
