Outdoor Spaces For Indoor Cats

Outdoor Spaces For Indoor Cats

Want your little lion to experience the great outdoors, but scared that it may put them in danger? We can help! Here are some nifty ideas to get your feline friend outside, while still being an indoor cat.

We know that some spaces are easier to convert than others, but hopefully, you will find something on this list that will work with your home, or maybe if you are feeling adventurous, you can modify one to fit!

5 Tips To Make Your Apartment A Happy Space For Your Cat:

1. Screen in your entire patio with mesh to make sure the kitty is safe and secure and doesn’t fall.

2. Create a screened-in cat enclosure with as many levels as possible that has access via a window or door. This can be from floor to ceiling on your patio, or you could securely hang it off the side of the apartment around a window on ground floor apartments. See the pictures below for examples.

3. Create a climbing area inside your house with a ‘cat tree’ where they can view the outside safely.

4. Grow an indoor garden area with pet-safe plants and a water fountain – cats love jungles and running water! You can make this as fancy as you want with multiple pots, layers of rocks—let your imagination run wild! Make sure it includes a good-sized box of wheatgrass since your kitty would love this.

5. Create an indoor cat run along with the ceiling and walls.

Making Your House Purrfect For Your Kitty!

All Apartment living ideas would work in a house too, but if you have more space or a yard, here are some great ideas to give your kitty a happy house life.

  • Create a secured cat run that other animals cannot get into. Make sure the cat run has enough shade/heat source depending on weather. This could be anything from a small penned-in area to an enclosure that runs along the entire fence (can be ground level or raised).
  • Create a garden area within the enclosure

Adding a stylish window perch so kitty can curl up and watch the activity outside.

Kate Benjamin, the editor of hauspanther.com and co-author of New York Times bestsellers Catification and Catify to Satisfy, says, “If you have a big window facing toward the yard, try adding a stylish window perch where kitty can curl up and watch the activity outside. You can even hang a bird feeder outside the window to attract wildlife and make the view more entertaining.”

Even small attempts will be appreciated by your cat – like having access to an open window (with a safe screen of course). Think “nature” and get creative – they will love you for it!
