Vet Talk: Why Give a Multivitamin to a Healthy Pet?

Posted October 28, 2016

When our pets are healthy and young, it’s natural for us as pet parents to wonder ‘is it really necessary to give my healthy dog or cat a multivitamin?

The answer is simply—yes.

Vitamins are necessary for life. They help to regulate body processes, protect the body from environmental toxins, and break down nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats so the body can utilize them.

Vitamins are needed for literally every chemical reaction in the body and work in conjunction with minerals and enzymes to facilitate normal digestion, reproduction, muscle and bone growth and function, healthy skin and hair, clotting of blood, and the use of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates by the body.

A healthy good quality food that is balanced is recommended. Supplementation with a multivitamin is beneficial, especially for highly active dogs, pets that are on a diet, or senior cats and dogs.

Super active pets may need more specific vitamins to achieve endurance or agility.  If pets are on a diet, less food is taken in; so daily requirements of vitamins may be missed. Older animals tend to absorb fewer vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes through the intestinal tract, and lose more of them through the kidneys and urinary tract.  In addition, some older animals eat less and may not receive their daily need of vitamins and minerals. However, all animals, at all stages can benefit from a high quality plant based multivitamin.

I always recommend the NHV Multi Essentials supplement. I like this supplement because, unlike other multivitamin supplements on the market, all the vitamins and minerals are derived from whole sources (natural herbs). Getting essential vitamins and minerals from natural sources, like fresh naturally raised meats and plants are the best way to boost your pet’s nutrition.
