A Dog’s Life: 10 Ways to Enrich Their Lives - dog

For thousands of years, dogs have been there for us. They have been our best friends, our closest confidants, our work partners, and our loyal heroes. Let’s spoil them and make their lives, which are often way too short, the best they can possibly be. Here are 10 small ways you can enrich the life of your dog and boost their physical and emotional well-being.

1. Keep Them Close: Dogs are social animals that love to engage with us. Keeping a comfy spot for them in the kitchen or family room will help boost their bond with you and build their confidence.

2. Play Some Tunes: Did you know dogs appreciate music? In fact, they love a variety of music from reggae to soft rock to classical. These sounds can help de-stress and relax your pup.

3. Buy a Treat Dispensing Toy: Putting a healthy treat (or better yet a homemade healthy treat!) inside a toy will keep your pup busy and engaged.

4. Growing the Family: Consider getting your dog another dog sister or brother. A furry sibling can provide friendship, confidence, and comfort for both. If getting another dog is just not possible, some dogs and cats get along great.

5. Stop and Smell The Roses: Dogs have 220 million olfactory receptors (in comparison, we humans only have 5 million). On walks, take the time to let them smell the world around them. If you have space in your backyard, make a pet-safe garden, with marigolds, petunias, or other fragrant flowering plants that won’t be harmful to your dog. For a list of plants that should be avoided, see our poisonous plants blog here

6. Spa Days are Good Days: Who doesn’t love to be pampered? Dogs, just like us people, love a good massage. Try rubbing some NHV Heal Care Ointment on paws and sore joints to help reduce inflammation and just make them feel so….[sigh] relaxed….

7. Get Social: Plan some play dates with other well-socialized dogs. There is nothing better than running, playing, and wrestling with a best friend.

Dogs actually learn better with visual signals than verbal ones.

8. Talk to the Hand: Dogs actually learn better with visual signals than verbal ones. When training your dog, use hand signals along with words for faster, clearer communication with your furry friend.

9. Play Smarter: A dog can be an incredibly intelligent animal who needs to have cognitive stimulation. Teach them to do more mind-engaging exercises like dog puzzles, or learning new skills and tricks.

10. Nutrition: A well-balanced diet is essential to keeping your dog happy. After all, good nutrition for your dog means many more years you’ll get to spend with them. Try adding a multivitamin like NHV Multi Essentials to their diet to make sure they are getting a boost of vitamins and minerals too.
