Canine Distemper and how NHV helped puppies fight the virus

What is Canine Distemper?

It is commonly spread through the air and can survive in very cold environments.

Canine Distemper is a contagious and viral illness that usually affects young and not vaccinated puppies. It can attack the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). It’s an enveloped virus very concentrated in respiratory tract secretions and it is also found in body fluids, like urine. It is commonly spread through the air and can survive in very cold environments. The virus can be destroyed by sunlight, high heat, drying, and many common disinfectants.

Symptoms

Clinical signs depend on the severity of the disease. When mild, the pet can present fever, lethargy, and slight nasal or eye discharge. Severe infections occur most often in puppies and unvaccinated adult dogs and it can show symptoms like fever, watery or cloudy nasal and eye discharge, coughing that may be accompanied by difficult breathing, decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.

If the central nervous system is affected, the pet can show more intense symptoms like seizure, behavioral changes, weakness, difficulty walking, involuntary repetitive contractions of certain muscles in one limb, twitching of facial muscles, respiratory and gastrointestinal issues.

Diagnosis of Canine Distemper

No single test is available to make diagnose Canine Distemper, so several tests are usually performed to find evidence of the disease. Because of the highly contagious nature of this virus, if the dogs are suspected to have Canine Distemper, they should be isolated.

There are no drugs available that will completely destroy the virus. However, supportive care is essential which includes intravenous fluids, anti-vomiting medication, nebulization, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

Dogs that appear to recover from respiratory and gastro-intestinal illness may develop central nervous system signs that can be seen in the following weeks or even months later. Recovering dogs may shed viruses for several weeks so close monitoring and care are very important during this period. It is also important to minimize or prevent interaction with other dogs, especially the ones that are not vaccinated. Also, it is important to disinfect the cages and floors, and all organic material must be removed.

How NHV supplements helped puppies with Canine Distemper

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Canine Distemper, so Dora from Rags2Wags Rescue contacted us hopelessly, trying to help 5 dogs that had come to her care and who had been exposed to Canine Distemper.  After 3-4 weeks of being exposed to the virus, the pups started to get very sick and present symptoms like respiratory congestion. Our vet team carefully put together a holistic regimen to support these sweet rescue pups. We decided to add 5 different natural supplements to their regimen with a higher dose to boost their immune system and help them fight the virus and symptoms.

Dora had also had 7 other dogs in her care at the time, who had all been vaccinated but had been exposed to the pups. As a precaution, our team advised her to also give them the supplements for a couple of months so they would have a stronger immune system as well. Thankfully they never had any issues.

After a couple of months using all the supplements, along with a healthy balanced diet and lots of attention from their wonderful rescuer @rags2wagsrescue, we were extremely happy to get an update from Dora. This is what she posted on her Instagram account:

We have also received the amazing news that the pups are doing great and one of them has even found a forever and loving home.
