Five Floofy Furriends: Supporting A Dog With Liver Failure

Lifestyles of the Furry & Fabulous 3 min read
floofy furriends

We recently caught up with our NHV furriends @angelswithwetnoses to get to know the floofs a little bit better. Angels With Wet Noses is a pack of five beautiful girls named Penelope, Flower, Zoey, Ruthie, and Daisy. We met the furmily when their pawrent reached out for support with Ruthie’s skin issues and Daisy after she was diagnosed with liver failure.

We reached out to the crew to get better acquainted with the cuties and share their stories for all to enjoy!

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about each of your furkiddos?

Penelope, Shih Tzu, 12 yrs young
Zoey, Morkie, 10 years young
Flower, Shih Tzu, 12 yrs young
Ruthie, Shih Tzu, 11, years young
Daisy, Maltese, 8 years young

Q: We have been supporting Daisy with her liver condition, and Ruthie with her hypothyroidism for some time now. Can you tell us a little bit more about their conditions and how you discovered that they had them?

Ruthie was adopted with skin issues. Her yeast infection was very aggressive. Her hair was oily and she smelled like Fritos. It took a lot of medicated baths, tests, meds before she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. She is on Thyro-Tabs 0.1mg 1/2 tablet BID for life.

Daisy’s urine was always dark, but in the summer, I noticed her urine was dark orange. She’s a Maltese, so her hair was getting stained from the urine. When I flipped her over to trim her hair, she was yellow with jaundice. She was diagnosed with liver failure and spent a week in the ER. She had surgery to biopsy her liver. The surgeon did find a teeny tiny gallbladder that was hidden and so small, it wouldn’t have been possible to find it when she had an ultrasound. They did not remove it because it was empty and nothing was wrong with it. Her liver, however, is very unusual. The left side is super small, yellow, and very firm. The right side/lobes are very big, possibly compensating for the left side. She may have been born with a congenital issue that is catching up to her now.

When the ER internist reviewed the biopsy report, she said she’s never seen a report like Daisy’s. It was two pages long and single-spaced, with an addendum to follow. We still didn’t know the underlying cause of her condition other than it’s very similar to Cholangiohepatitis and Microvascular dysplasia. Per the addendum, her copper level was 935. Normal range 120-400 parts per million. 1500 is toxic. At the time, her prognosis was guarded because her case was unprecedented.

Q: What supplements do you give your girls and have you seen improvements or changes since starting them?

Ruthie takes NHV Thyro-Up, Multi Essentials, Stimmune, Natures Immune, Felimm, and Vetri-Mega Probiotic.

Daisy takes NHV Milk Thistle, Turmeric, Multi Essentials, and Stimmune.

I do see an improvement, especially with Daisy’s blood panel levels.

Q: They have quite the fashion collection! How many outfits do they have and which one is your favorite?

They have too many outfits to count! My favorite is their Christmas outfits, especially their PJs

Q: If your crew were to run a pet shop, who would have what role and why?

Penelope would be customer service. She is polite and calm.
Zoey would be a supervisor because she’s very bossy!
Ruthie would be security. She may look cute, but she’s fierce!
Flower is sight and hearing impaired, so she would just hang out in the break room.
Daisy would be the greeter. She’s very friendly!

Q: What is their favorite activity to do together as a furmily?

NAP!!! So there you have it! Five beautiful angels with a special story to share. We’re so happy to be a part of the journey and seeing Daisy and Ruthie improve each day is why we love what we do. The love @angelswithwetnoses receive shows it’s not the number of furkiddos you have, but the time you spend together that truly matters.
