Meet Potato. He is a Pug/Shar-Pei blend, and we are just in love with this celebrity pup. Potato’s story is not one without its share of struggle, strength, and perseverance. He was originally found roaming the streets of LA and was turned into a shelter.
He lived in a park with a homeless camp and was often seen wandering around looking for food. From there he was rescued by Love Leo Rescue. At this time Potato was severely obese and had a variety of other health concerns.
Potato in 2017
His foster mom started taking him for daily ‘boot camp’ walks and maintained this exercise regimen, balanced with a diet chock full of healthy veggies. This was a good start to Potato’s weight loss journey. The rescue folks guessed that he was between 8-10 years old.
They knew that being overweight could shorten his life, and knew this would make him more susceptible to long-term health problems. Potato and his people have been working hard to bring his weight down to a more healthy level.

I can really say that NHV drops are like a miracle. They work so well, Tater had his labs redone on Wednesday and Friday they called and said everything looks good as if he didn’t have cancer.
Potato now has begun to give back to the community that helped rescue him from the streets. He has become a certified therapy animal and dropped down to 24 lbs. This slim and trim pooch is continuing on his journey. He loves bringing joy and light into the lives of others. Most importantly, Potato has found his forever home with the power of love and community around him. Cancer won’t stop this svelte spud from living his best life with his new family.

He’s gone. Our sweet little Potato has left for the rainbow bridge. He was perfect and doing fine. He looked a little tired and the vets sent him home with IV fluids as everything else seemed okay. He slept in the night and passed away in his sleep.
Unfortunately, this is aggressive cancer and it can cause a lot of suffering. Potato’s passing leaves his family, his friends, his vet team, and everyone here at NHV sad and heartbroken. But we’re happy that he lived for as long as he did and that he did not suffer. He is an inspiration for many pups living in shelters fighting diseases like cancer.
