Fun Pet Facts for the Holidays

It’s the time of year for love, laughter, and surprises and we bet a few of these holiday pet facts might just surprise you!

Approximately 65% of US households own a pet. Of those, it is estimated that 37-47% have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat -that’s approximately 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats! Although Freshwater fish take the top spot as the most popular pet, with a whopping estimated 95.5 million swimming around in US homes.

But did you know…….

1. 56% of dog owners and 42% of cat owners say they bought holiday gifts for their pets last year.

2. 60-70% of pet parents say they’ve signed their pets’ names on cards and letters and 58% include their pets in family holiday portraits.

3. This holiday season, pet owners are expected to spend an average of $62 for presents for their furry friends. Millennials however are expected to outspend everyone else at an average of $81 each. (If we do the math……That’s a lot!!!!)

4. Some scientists believe that the Reindeer was one of the first domesticated animals (first domesticated around 2,000 years ago, per the Smithsonian).

Reindeer don’t fly, but they do sometimes have red noses.

a) Reindeer don’t fly, but they do sometimes have red noses. Reindeer have 25% more capillaries that carry red, oxygen-rich blood in their noses than humans. These vessels are essential for regulating the animal’s internal body temperature and in colder climates, an increase in blood flow to the nose helps keep the nose’s surface warm.

b) Santa’s reindeer must be female since in all images they have antlers. Male reindeer lose their antlers in November, but females will keep theirs for much longer.

c) Reindeer are quite quick! They can run up to 50 mph (80 km/h).

d) Reindeer are built for the cold. Not only do their noses warm up the air before it gets to their lungs, but their entire bodies, including their hooves, are covered with fur.

A couple more fun pet facts as a little extra gift to you:

1. It has been proven that pet owners live longer, have less stress, have fewer heart attacks and see doctors 25% fewer times than people who don’t have pets.

2. Over 50% of all pet owners would rather be stranded on a desert island with their pet than another person.
