Medicinal Mushrooms For Cancer And Immunity In Dogs And Cats

Herbs For Pets 4 min read
Medical mushrooms for cancer

Medicinal mushrooms have demonstrated benefits for cancer, a compromised immune system, fatigue, chronic infections, disorders of the liver, endocrine, kidney, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. It’s no wonder that the veterinary and medical communities are incredibly excited about medicinal mushrooms. But mushrooms as a healing food aren’t a recent development. In fact, throughout history, cultures around the world have used mushrooms for both food and medicine. What’s fascinating, however, is that modern research is rediscovering these ancient super-foods, and finding that there is good evidence that mushrooms are among the most powerful functional food in a growing cancer-fighting and cancer-preventing arsenal.

Recent Veterinary and Medical Research into Medicinal Mushrooms

Countless studies have been conducted, and are presently being conducted regarding medicinal mushroom use for both humans and animals. Studies are finding that mushrooms have a variety of health benefits from being anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular-protective, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anti-tumor, and anti-cancer.

In fact, “extensive research over the last 40 years has demonstrated that mushrooms have potent antineoplastic properties that slow growth of tumors, regulate tumor genes, decrease tumoral angioneogenesis, and increase malignant-cell phagocytosis [eats malignant cells]. Additionally, evidence suggests that medicinal mushrooms may safely boost chemotherapeutic efficacy and simultaneously protect against bone marrow suppression.” (Guggenheim, et al. 2014)

In a recent study, researchers found that a derivative of the Turkey Tail mushroom (PSK), when administered to stage II/III colorectal patients along with standard therapy had a 26.6% higher survival rate than those who were on standard therapy alone. (Guggenheim, et al. 2014)

In 2012, the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine conducted a study of 15 dogs with hemangiosarcoma who were given a mushroom compound. The results of the study shocked the Penn Vet researchers. While the longest reported median survival time of dogs with the disease who were given no treatment was 86 days, there were dogs in the Penn study, who lived over a year with no treatment other than the mushroom compound.

Are All Mushrooms Good For Pet Health?

The simple answer is that no, not all mushrooms are good for pet health. Estimates vary as to how many are considered medicinal mushrooms (anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand), but only about a dozen of those have been well researched. Please do not feed your dog or cat unknown mushrooms.

Although adding some mushrooms to a pet’s diet may be a good idea, they will not get anywhere close to the same medicinal benefits as an extract of specific, highly researched medicinal mushrooms.

Can I give my pet raw mushrooms a couple of times a day to get the health benefits?

Although adding some mushrooms to a pet’s diet may be a good idea, they will not get anywhere close to the same medicinal benefits as an extract of specific, highly researched medicinal mushrooms. As well, some medicinal mushrooms are only available as extracts and are not available as food.

What are the good medicinal mushrooms for my pet?

What are turkey tail mushrooms

NHV Natural Pet Products’ new medicinal mushroom blend for pets— “Natures Immuno”, consists of 5 species of highly researched medicinal mushrooms. They are turkey tails, cordyceps, reishi, shiitake, and Agaricus. Here’s a bit on each one.

Turkey Tail mushroom – Studies have shown that Turkey Tail mushrooms are beneficial for a wide variety of cancers, including mammary gland cancer and lymphoma. Researchers believe that Turkey Tail mushrooms contain properties that fight cancer while helping to strengthen the immune system. It also has antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties.

Coredyceps mushroom is rich in phytonutrients and contains polysaccharides, which help with antioxidant properties. Research has indicated that cordyceps have anti-tumor, immune-stimulating, and hypoglycemic activity. Cordyceps are also beneficial for heart health, liver, kidney health, and help lower blood sugar.

Reishi mushroom has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese Medicine. Current research indicates that Reishi mushrooms are helpful in supporting the immune and cardiovascular systems, as well as helping to increase oxygenation of the blood. Reishi is effective against sarcoma and tumor necrosis. Reishi is currently being used in Japan and China in conjunction with chemotherapy drugs.

Shiitake mushroom has been used for thousands of years in herbalism. Research indicates that Shiitake has strong antibiotic and antibacterial properties against a broad spectrum of pathogens. In addition to its cancer-fighting properties, it is useful in supporting heart health as it lowers cholesterol and helps lessen plaque in the arteries.

Agaricus mushrooms are studied for their usefulness in preventing cancer cell production. Agaricus is considered an antimutagenic and an adaptogen, which helps combat stress and supports the endocrine function. It is useful for pets with autoimmune conditions, digestive issues, and heart problems. Agaricus is being used in Japan as an adjunctive with chemotherapy treatments.

How do I choose a good mushroom blend for my pet?

When choosing a mushroom blend for cats and dogs, it’s important to make sure that the bioavailability of the mushrooms is taken into consideration. NHV’s Nature Immuno blend is in liquid form and is readily absorbed into the digestive tract, making for a higher chance than powdered mushrooms or raw mushrooms to boost the body’s immune system against cancer.

It’s also really important the mushrooms go through a testing process prior to production. NHV does do testing and uses non-GMO vegetable glycerin as the base. All NHV products are full-spectrum extracts, which means that the biochemical and phytoceutical constituents of the herbs are preserved during extraction to produce a superior supplement with high efficacy and a strong bioavailability.

Our products are manufactured in our state-of-the-art facility where they must meet stringent in-house standards before being tested a second time by a third-party lab.

    What is the price?

    1. NHV Natural Pet Products says:

      Hello Cherry,

Our Natures Immnuo product is priced at $53.95. This supplement is very effective for helping to fight cancer and helps boost the immune system to help fight viral and bacterial infections.
Please note that our supplements are all natural and do not contain any preservatives, so they require refrigeration once opened and will last 6 months in the fridge. Please also note that we have 2 dosages: The maintenance dosage used to maintain health, which is on the bottle (1 drop per 2 lbs of weight, twice per day) and a therapeutic dosage used to address a condition, which is outlined in the table below. We would suggest using the therapeutic dosage when addressing this condition.

Therapeutic Pet’s Weight Dosage– to be taken two times per day
      0 – 15 lb = 0.5 mL
      16 – 30 lb = 1.0 mL
      31 – 45 lb = 1.5 mL
      46 – 60 lb = 2.0 mL
      61 – 75 lb = 2.5 ml
      Over 75lb= 3.0 ml

We would suggest administering the supplements with food or with your furry friend’s favorite treat for convenience. Alternatively you may wish to administer the product via a syringe or dropper directly into the mouth preferably after feeding so that the product is easier on the digestive system.

I hope that you find this information helpful and if you have any questions about the supplements or dosages, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are always happy to help!

  2. Cynthia Antonucci says:

What do you recommend for a dog that has been on Apoquel and prednisone? Also has grass allergies. No longer on these items. Had severe reactions. Currently trying to rebuild his system. Still itching, so biting and scratching.

    1. NHV Natural Pet Products says:

      Hello Cynthia,

      Thank you for your comment.
May I ask what the actual diagnosed condition was? As pharmaceuticals like Prednisolone and Apoquel can be quite hard on the liver, we would suggest using Milk Thistle to help the liver regenerate from this damage and also to help detoxify the liver, blood and other vital organs.

To help rebuild and boost the immune system and help address any possible allergies that may be related to food we would suggest using the Stimmune. If these symptoms are possibly caused by allergies to do with the environment we would suggest using Alge Ex. Please note that all of these supplements are perfectly safe to use together and at the same time.

We would suggest using the therapeutic dosage which is as follows:

  3. Niki Goumenis says:

Hi! Just found your product and I have a question: 2 and a half months ago, my 8 year old cat Endora was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in her upper jaw and for the last month, I’ve been giving her a high quality [therapeutic oil] with high THC, from “King Harvest” and need to know if it’s safe to give her this as well. Thanks

    1. NHV says:

      Hi Niki,

We’re so sorry to hear of Endora’s diagnosis 🙁 All of our supplements are safe to give with that type of oil (unfortunately we cannot publish info on these oils on our site) The THC is not the ingredient which you should be looking for. We will send you an email with further information. Please send our best wishes to Endora ❤

  4. manti says:

Can this be taken in combination with trans dermal prednisolone?

    1. Raphael M says:

Yes, it’s safe to give Natures Immune along with dermal prednisolone.

  5. Rachel Goller says:

Can I give this along with oral [pharmaceutical name removed]?

    1. Syndy says:

      Hi Rachel,

Yes you can give any of the NHV supplements to a pet on any vet prescribed medication. We do recommend, however that they be separated out by about 2 hours. In addition to the Natures Immuno, we would also recommend the Milk Thistle, as most medication is processed through the liver and it is highly recommended to support this vital organ.

    2. NHV Natural Pet says:

      Hi Rachel,
You can absolutely feed your sweet furkiddo the prescribed medication with our supplements. Our suggestion is to space the supplements two hours apart after the medication, this is to ensure your furkiddo gets the full healing properties of both the meds and the supplements.
We’re just a message away and do let us know if you have any other questions. Sending lots of love and healing vibes to your little one
