We love sushi, so it only makes sense our furkiddos would too! Sushi shouldn’t be fed to your pet as a regular meal but it makes a nice treat on special occasions. This salmon sushi recipe for dogs and cats is easy to make and can be enjoyed by humans and furry ones alike!

When given to your pet in safe quantities, many of the ingredients used in this recipe have great health benefits!

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and many vitamins and minerals like vitamin B, potassium, and selenium. It also contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Cucumbers are nutritious as they are high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin K, vitamin C, and potassium. Cucumbers also have the added benefit of being hydrating and a source of antioxidants.

Nori seaweed is a good source of fiber, vitamin A, and iron. Nori is also high in iodine and tyrosine which promote thyroid function.

For pets with hyperthyroidism, we recommend avoiding iodine as it can cause the thyroid to become even more overactive.

Steps

1. Start by preparing your rice. Rinse the rice in cold water 3 times or until the water runs clear. Allow the rice to cook until the water has evaporated and the rice is sticky. Allow your rice to cool down before using it to roll your sushi, as it will be hot on your hands.

2. Set up your rolling station by clearing a clean workspace and wrapping your rolling mat in plastic wrap to keep the rolling mat clean. Make sure that the reeds of the rolling mat are running horizontally when it comes time for rolling. It is a good idea to have a bowl of cool water handy to dip your fingers and knife in to keep the rice from sticking.

3. Cut your salmon and cucumber into thin, long pieces and set aside.

4. Spread out the rice in an approximately 1 cm thick layer on the sushi mat in a square shape. Do not squish the rice down but lightly even out the rice layer. Place the sheet of nori shiny side up on your bed of rice. You want to have about an inch of your bed of rice not covered at the top to help seal the roll. You may have to tear your nori into a smaller size.

5. Place the pieces of salmon and cucumber along the bottom edge of your nori. The salmon and cucumber should only go up to about a third on the nori, otherwise, it may be too full to seal properly.

6. Using the rolling mat, start rolling at the edge nearest you. You can use your fingers to hold the ingredients inside the roll as you use your thumbs to roll the mat. Once the ingredients have been tucked inside the roll, gently squeeze the roll to help seal the ingredients inside and form the base of the roll. Continue to roll the mat away from you without allowing the mat to be tucked into the nori. Once the roll is formed inside the mat, gently squeeze again to help compress the rice to hold the shape and seal the roll. Gently remove your roll from the mat and transfer it to a plate that you can cut on.

7. Dip your knife in the water to prevent the rice from getting stuck to the knife and help it cut through cleanly. Slice the roll into approximately 1-inch pieces, dipping the knife in the water between each cut.

8. In a sauce dish, add your favorite NHV supplement to use as a dip instead of soy sauce. As the sushi will likely not soak up all of the supplements in the dish, we recommend adding double your pet’s usual dosage based on their weight into the dish.

9. Using chopsticks, dip the sushi in the supplement, and serve to your furkiddo either straight off the chopsticks or on a plate.
