In our veterinary practice, we frequently prescribe turmeric with much success for inflammatory processes (arthritis, uveitis, vasculitis) and pets with diabetic conditions, and pet cancer patients

Many of us have Turmeric sitting in our spice cabinets for use in seasoning, but did you know that in humans and pets, Turmeric also has qualities as an antibacterial agent, anticoagulant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticarcinogen, and neuroprotector? In our veterinary practice, we frequently prescribe turmeric with much success for inflammatory processes (arthritis, uveitis, vasculitis) and pets with diabetic conditions, and pet cancer patients. Turmeric has been around for around 4000 years. It is derived from the root of the turmeric plant, Curcumin longa. It’s a perennial in the ginger family, native to South Asia. It has a distinct yellow color, and is slightly bitter—but also sweet tasting. It is used primarily for cooking in curries, pickling spices, yellow cakes, ice cream, cake icing, and cereals. The active component of turmeric is Curcumin.

However, you can’t just give regular turmeric powder to your pets. The oral bioavailability of Turmeric can be a problem, meaning that it is not absorbed well into a pet’s body if given by mouth. If black pepper or liposomal substances such as coconut oil or ghee is mixed with turmeric, it is absorbed more rapidly throughout the body. NHV Natural Pet Product’s Turmeric supplement contains black pepper to increase bioavailability. NHV’s supplement has been used with success to help reduce inflammation, discomfort, digestive disorders, and cancer support for pets. Like, our herbal formulation, OcuLove, which can contains Turmeric and helps to encourage overall eye health while helping to slow degeneration of the eye.

There are some precautions with turmeric in general. There have been some studies that suggest that turmeric may aggravate existing liver issues such as bile duct obstruction, so be sure to consult your veterinarian before giving it to a pet with liver disease. Since turmeric is a binding agent that is useful in alleviating loose stools and diarrhea, be sure your pet has plenty of freshwaters available to prevent potential constipation. Turmeric is also anticoagulant, so we recommend discontinuing it before a surgical procedure. And remember, that beautiful yellow color of powdered turmeric does stain fur, carpet, and hands, so be careful when handling!

We LOVE turmeric, it has helped us for years, and all our animals are on it too!
